Catholic composer and musician Lynn Geyer has just released a new album, “Journey to Forgiveness: The Way of the Cross.” Accompanied by an attractive booklet, the disc is a meditative aid to praying the Stations of the Cross. The seventeen songs on the album highlight Lynn's crystal voice and sure sense of her art. Her fellow musicians, Ron Zabrocki and Michael Zabrocki, also, do a fine job. The backup music is thoroughly professional and well done. This album lacks nothing; the sound quality is excellent and each song is an adventure in Catholic contemporary music that accompanies the reflections for each station of the cross found in the booklet. The lyrics of each song are printed in full, and the facing page contains sharp photographs of the carved woods stations found in Lynn’s parish church. The beauty of “Journey to Forgiveness” is that it can be used privately or in a parish church. The prayers for each station of the cross are optimally said by two lectors, to which the congregation responds. After the prayers, the disc can be played, or local parish musicians may perform the songs or substitute their own music.
This is Lynn’s fifth album, and it is a fine piece of work. The accompanying booklet is professionally done by someone who knows graphic arts, Maria Ilardi of Hastings-On-Hudson, NY. The typeface is well chosen, there is a great deal of white space, whose contribution to a printed page can never be overestimated, and the blocks of text forming the prayers and responses and songs are just the right length to convey a message without tiring the reader or the congregation.
Here is the Ninth Station:
Lector 1: For a third time the weight of the cross overcomes Him; in the suffering struggle, His legs give out and Jesus collapses again. With tremendous effort and as impossible as it appears to be, He manages to get up and go on. This is all becoming too much to witness; can you continue walking with Him in this never ending horror when there is still so far to go? Are you beginning to wonder if this message of love and peace is worth this hideous brutality and certain death?
Lector 2: Let’s remember to pray for people trapped in hellish situations beyond their control or harmful addictions they are too weak to overcome. (Pause) Has the presence of evil in this world caused me to become cynical, indifferent to people who are weak or oppressed? Am I sometimes indifferent to God, despite all the good things I receive from Him daily? Do I set aside enough time; do I set aside ANY time, to spend with God to pray for those who do not know Him?
All: Lord, please forgive my limited prayer time and help me to patiently pray with someone who is weak, to help them find the love and peace offered in Jesus. Help me see that if I’m too busy to pray, then I’m too busy. I want to change. Have mercy on me. I want to believe, Lord, Please help me see.”
