A
native of Ottawa Canada, by his 24th birthday, David was
the “Rock and Roll Cat” in the First U.S. National tour of
Cats. While in New York, he worked with Robert Downey
Jr., Christopher Lloyd, James Spader, Eric Stoltz, and Broadway star
Liz Calloway. He co-starred in films for Paramount, Columbia
Pictures, and ABC TV.
He appeared
on Broadway, produced rap music in Harlem and for CBS records
for which he won a Feature Pick in
Billboard Magazine.
However, David did
not know the Lord and his life fell into addiction. Soon after
participating in an abortion, David blew out his voice and couldn’t
talk for 3 years. His career, the very thing he tried to preserve
with the abortion was taken away. He gave up music and returned to
Canada. David started looking for answers to life’s difficult
questions. One night he completely surrendered to Jesus. His life
took a new direction. Several months later he had a powerful
experience with Mother Mary. He began doing the Rosary daily in 1991
and converted to Catholicism in 1995.
In April 1998, on a
Catholic Cursillo retreat, he felt moved by the Spirit and began
writing music for the first time in 10 years. He promised God only
to sing for Him. His voice came back with clarity and power. David
said “Lord, I would love to record that song, but I have no money.”
A week later a fellow came up to him on the street and said “David
MacDonald? You produced me back in the 80’s and I was so inspired
that I bought $10,000 worth of recording equipment. I’m a lawyer now
and don’t need it. Do you want to borrow it?” Several days later a
lady in Church came up to him and said “my mother died and left a
1200 digital piano do you want it?” Then another musician said “hey
I have a whole bunch of instruments, feel free to use them.” So in a
few weeks David was recording a CD. This started a little music
ministry for David.
He has since
had performances and interviews on Canadian radio, TV,
and has
played
at major festivals including sharing the stage with bands like
“Sixpense None the Richer” and Grammy award winners “Jars
of Clay” at Soulfest. David’s single “Cult Cult-ure” hit #3 on the
CHRI Christian Music Charts and spent 8 weeks in the top 10. He was
the music director at the WYD activities in Ottawa for 5000 youth
and sang in the chorus of the official 2002 World Youth Day theme
song CD. David also wrote the theme song for the Canada’s “March for
Life”, a pro-life gathering of thousands in front of Canada’s
Parliament. In November 2003 David was chosen to represent Canada and play his song
“Life is the Only Choice” at
the XIX World Festival of Marian
Songs in Guatemala. He built a website
www.BeFree.ca that is becoming a hub where Evangelical Christians
find out about the Catholic faith.
David’s music is
contemporary Christian, praise and worship with R&B influences. He
is a solid musician (vocals, guitar, flute, keyboards) and has a
great sense of comic timing in his talks that he does for youth.
